Whisk(e)y Wednesday - 2020-10-28

Another bottle down - tonight I'm finishing off my bottle of Stitzel Weller Blade & Bow, Kentucky Straight Bourbon, coming in at 45.5% ABV.

After drinking mostly Scotches the last few years, recently I've been trying some bourbons. This showed up on my radar and looked interesting, so I figured I'd give it a try.

Fruit on the nose, along with some floral. Taste is certainly fruity, but with some mint freshness and a bit of spice. Finish for me has solid woody notes, along with caramel. Overall quite enjoyable, certainly not boring. I picked this up for $45, which seems about right. Rated 3.5 / 5.0

Whisk(e)y Wednesday - 2020-10-21

Tonight I'm finishing off my bottle of Compass Box Artist's Blend - Great King Street, blended Scotch Whisky, coming in at 43% ABV.

For the longest time I was a bit of a Scotch snob when it came to blends, figuring Single Malts were always better - not realizing that a Single Malt is most often a blend as well - but a blend from one distillery. In the past, I've had a few lower end blends, mostly various Johnnie Walker offerings, but I figured I could see if I could find a reasonably priced blend I liked. This one was well reviewed so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Vanilla on the nose with some citrus as well, a touch of spice seems to come in as well. Lemon on the taste, along with creamy vanilla and a hit of barrel as well, which I seem to get more of in the finish. Water doesn't change things very much - smooths out some of the spice for me.

I purchased this for under $40 from Flaviar, and it is certainly a nice Scotch at that price. I love how open and transparent Compass Box is - you can go to their website and see what they used in the blend. I'll be buying a replacement bottle of this at some point - Rated 3.5 / 5.0

Whisk(e)y Wednesday - 2020-10-14

This evening I'm trying SIA Blended Scotch Whisky, coming in at 43% ABV

The nose is floral with citrus coming through, along with some alcohol that is hard to get past. On the taste, we have burnt sugar along with the citrus, with a touch of nutty flavor on the finish. Adding water doesn't change things to me. This is a blend of Speyside, Highland and a touch of Islay, but not I'm finding any smoke or peat.

SIA sells for under $50, but I'd likely buy something else before this. Rated 2.75 / 5.0

Whisk(e)y Wednesday - 2020-10-07

Ok, trying to do something different... a review every Wednesday. We'll see how it goes.

Today we are trying Remus Repeal Reserve Series 2, 50% ABV, Straight Bourbon.

We have our standard Bourbon sweetness, caramel and toffee. The nose has some spice as well. Taste holds no surprises, sweet, caramel, and some rye spice. A bit of water makes it easier to drink, but brings out the spices - tastes more like a rye than a bourbon.

Quite enjoyable, I'd give it a 3.75 / 5.0 ... cheers!
