2017 - Day 24

Another Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar has came to a close. Today behind door #24 we have The Half-Century Blend Batch 2 Blended Scotch 46.4%. Very nice aroma from this: some fruit, some chocolate, maybe some mint. Flavor has some chocolate, a hint of coffee, I think some orange zest spice too. A dash of water seems to highlight the flavors while turning down the spice. Very interesting, very enjoyable. Rated 4/5.

2017 - Day 23

Today we have Glenfiddich Experimental Series IPA Cask Finnish, Single Malt 43%. Fresh aroma, comes through. Taste has some citrus zest, and there is a bit of hoppy taste. Pretty good overall. Water really brings out the zest - better neat. Rated 3/5.

2017 - Day 22

Today we have Angels Nectar Rich Peat Edition Blended Malt 46%. Smoke and woody aroma, good smoke in the taste, a little spice and fruit. A dash of water seems to highlight the fruit. Overall pretty good. Rated 3/5

2017 - Day 21

Today we have Kilchoman Single Cask 524/2011 Single Malt 58.3%. Strong alcohol from the aroma, which is to be expected. First sip - yep, this is nearly 120 proof, quite a kick. I do get a touch of peat along with some spice. Adding a dash of water brings the flavor to the front. Strong peat, some toffee and spice. Overall very enjoyable, could see buying a bottle. Rated 3.5/5

2017 - Day 20

Today we have Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition Blended Scotch 50%. Not much aroma on this one. A little bit of spice (or it might just be the alcohol) along with a touch of sweetness too. Reminds me of a rye whiskey. Water just seems to bring out the spice. If my budget was $25 for a bottle - I might consider it (: Rated 2.5/5

2017 - Day 19

Today we have Inchmurrin 12 Year Single Malt 46%. Not getting much aroma from this one. Pepper and spice taste - maybe too much for my preferences. A dash of water seems to tame things - still, I don't think this is my style. Rated 2.5/5

2017 - Day 18

Into the final week of the 2017 Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar. Today we had Riverflow Single Malt 46%. Aroma was a bit rough. Taste was pretty smooth though, with some spice, ginger, maybe some vanilla. A dash of water seems to bring out a bit of bread taste. It's OK - doubt I would buy it. Rated 2.5/5

Sunday, December 17, 2017

2017 - Day 17

Today we have Bowmore 15 Year "Darkest" Single Malt 43%. Rich color, light smokey aroma. Taste is smokey, leathery, oily with some toffee hints as well. A dash of water seems to bring out some spice. Overall quite enjoyable. Rated 3.5/5

Saturday, December 16, 2017

2017 - Day 16

Today we have Singleton of Dufftown 12 Year Single Malt 40%. Light floral aroma, smooth taste. Some spice and a touch of sweet. Water seems to bring out the zest. Pretty good overall, but not great. Rated 3/5.

2017 - Day 15

Something special today, The Lost Distilleries Blend Batch 10, Blended Scotch, 51%. Last year we had Batch 8, which was quite enjoyable. Not getting much aroma from this one. Lots of different flavors coming through. Getting some oak, with some fruit and toffee. A touch of water seems to bring out the sweetness. Very enjoyable - sadly only one sample. Would consider buying this if it wasn't nearly $400 a bottle.

Thursday, December 14, 2017

2017 - Day 14

Today we have Smokehead Single Malt 43%. To no surprise, smokey aroma, with some fruitiness too. Quite a bit of peat flavor, some sweet and spice too. A dash of water seems to take the edge off a bit. Rated 3/5

Wednesday, December 13, 2017

2017 - Day 13

Today we have Wolfburn Aurora Single Malt 46%. Nice aroma with some sweet and spice hints. Fruity taste, a bit of burn. A dash of water doesn't change things much. Can't quite figure this one out, taste is a bit elusive, but it's pretty decent. Rated 3/5

Tuesday, December 12, 2017

2017 - Day 12

Today we have Loch Lomond 12 Year Single Malt 46%. Floral, vanilla, and some spice aroma. Spice is up front in the taste, hints of fruit and possibly some wood undertones. It's pretty good. Rated 3/5.

Monday, December 11, 2017

2017 - Day 11

Nearing the half way point, today we have our first repeat from last year, Tamdhu 10 Year Single Malt 40%. Sweet aroma, some spice, some vanilla and caramel. Overall enjoyable, rated 3/5.

Sunday, December 10, 2017

2017 - Day 10

For Day 10, we have Copper Dog Blended Malt, 40%. Some floral aroma, fairly smooth with a mixed flavor. Hints of fruit, honey and spice, but nothing really coming through strongly. Well balanced, a dash of water seems to up the spice, I'd say it's better neat, rated 3/5.

Saturday, December 9, 2017

2017 - Day 9

Today we have a blended malt, Big Peat, 48%. Earthy and sweet aroma, hints of butter, toffee and chocolate. Peat and smoke come through in the taste, with the peat lingering. A dash of water seems to intensify the peat and also brings out some petter spice. One of the better days so far - this was quite good. Rated 3.5/5, would buy.

Friday, December 8, 2017

2017 - Day 8

Today we have Glengoyne 15 Year Single Malt 43%. Sweet and spicy flavor, well balanced, and quite warming. A dash of water smooths the spice a bit, overall quite enjoyable. Rated 3/5

2017 - Day 7

For Day 7, we have Auchentoshan Three Wood Single Malt 43%. Complex aroma, dark in color. Interesting flavor, some spice and mild burn, but some other flavors as well. A dash of water brings out the wood. Rated 3.5/5

Wednesday, December 6, 2017

2017 - Day 6

Today we have Peat's Beast Single Malt 46%. Peaty aroma, which is up front in the flavor. A bit oily and some burn, either from spice or just the alcohol. A dash of water doesn't change things much. This one is all right, rated 3/5.

Tuesday, December 5, 2017

2017 - Day 5

Day 5 brings The GlenDronach 12 Year Single Malt 43%. Aroma has some zing. Flavor has some hints of sweet with some cinnamon spice. Smoky finish. Water seems to bring out the spice. Overall pretty good, rated 3.5/5

Monday, December 4, 2017

2017 - Day 4

Day 4 brings Inchmoan 12 Year Single Malt 46%. Aroma is quite inviting. Taste has some spice, some sweet, some leathery smokey hints. I was expecting more smoke, but it's not really there. Quite good and interesting overall. A dash of water smooths things out. Rated 3.5/5

Sunday, December 3, 2017

2017 - Day 3

Today we have a blended scotch - Monkey Shoulder coming in at 40%. Sweet aroma, smooth, mild taste. Some spice in the background, a dash of water seems to intensify the peppery spice taste. Good, but nothing too interesting. Decent scotch for the price. Rated 2.5/5

Saturday, December 2, 2017

2017 - Day 2

Today we have Port Askaig 8 Year Single Malt coming in at 45.8%. Nice aroma with hints of smoke. Taste has a bit of sweetness with peaty smoke coming through: some pepper spice as well. Not as smooth or well rounded as the Port Askaig 19 Year I've tried, but still quite good. A dash of water turns up the pepper taste, seems better straight. Rating 3.5/5
